Aqara is particularly useful when your smart home needs to understand what’s happening
Switching devices perform actions.
Sensors provide the information that makes those actions intelligent.
That’s where Aqara can become particularly valuable in a Home Assistant system.
Hive carries Aqara products covering:
- motion;
- presence;
- temperature;
- humidity;
- ambient light;
- environmental information.
But Aqara products don’t all connect to Home Assistant in exactly the same way.
Start with the protocol
Before purchasing an Aqara device, determine whether the specific model uses:
- Zigbee;
- Matter over Thread;
- Wi-Fi;
- a bridge-based route;
- another supported integration path.
That matters more than the Aqara logo on the box.
Home Assistant currently documents Aqara devices participating in its Works with Home Assistant programme, including the Presence Sensor FP1E and Presence Multi-Sensor FP300.
That still shouldn’t be expanded into “all Aqara products work the same way.”
They don’t.
Aqara FP300
The FP300 is particularly interesting because it combines several sensing functions.
Aqara specifies:
- PIR;
- 60GHz mmWave presence sensing;
- ambient light;
- temperature;
- humidity;
- Zigbee/Thread;
- two CR2450 batteries.
That makes it substantially more than a traditional motion sensor.
Instead of simply knowing that somebody walked past, an automation can potentially work with continued occupancy and environmental information as well. (aqara.com)
Aqara FP1E
The FP1E is a different proposition.
It’s a powered 60GHz mmWave presence sensor using Zigbee.
It makes sense where the primary requirement is dedicated presence detection and suitable power is available.
Home Assistant currently lists the FP1E among Aqara’s Works with Home Assistant Matter devices via the appropriate Aqara architecture.
Aqara FP2
The FP2 shouldn’t simply be described as “the better FP1E.”
Its design targets a different type of installation.
Aqara positions the powered Wi-Fi FP2 around more advanced spatial/zone presence capabilities. That makes it useful where automations need to distinguish different areas within a room.
For example:
Desk zone occupied → desk lighting routine.
Sofa zone occupied → entertainment lighting routine.
Nobody present → room enters vacant state.
That’s different from simply asking whether somebody is somewhere in the room.
Aqara P1 motion sensor
Traditional PIR motion sensors still have an important role.
A hallway doesn’t necessarily need advanced mmWave presence tracking.
You generally care that somebody has entered or moved through it.
That’s why the Aqara P1 Motion Sensor remains relevant.
Good automation isn’t about putting the most advanced sensor everywhere.
It’s about using the simplest technology that reliably solves the problem.
Environmental sensing
Aqara also gives Hive useful environmental options.
The Temperature & Humidity Sensor T1 suits compact measurement applications.
The Climate Sensor W100 serves a different role where local display/control and environmental information are useful.
Those devices can provide Home Assistant with inputs for climate-related automations.
For example:
Humidity rises beyond the chosen condition → notify or operate appropriate ventilation.
Or:
Room temperature crosses a defined threshold → adjust compatible climate equipment.
The sensor provides information.
Home Assistant provides the logic.
A practical multi-brand automation
Consider a home office.
An Aqara presence sensor determines that somebody is still at the desk.
Ambient light indicates that the room has become dark.
Home Assistant evaluates both conditions.
A compatible Shelly or Sonoff switching device controls the light.
That is a more useful automation than:
motion → light on for five minutes.
And it demonstrates why choosing every component from one brand isn’t necessary.

Does Aqara work with Home Assistant?
Many Aqara devices can, but the integration method depends on the specific product and protocol. Check the model before purchasing.
Does every Aqara device need an Aqara hub?
No universal answer applies. The requirement depends on the product and integration route.
What’s the difference between motion and presence?
